Update from Dr. Villebrun, Superintendent

Floodwood Elementary is currently going through a process called Minnesota School of Excellence through the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association. Through this process, we will identify areas of strength and areas to work on. We are thankful to surveys that have been completed and brought back to school. We need your input to ensure the strengths and concerns are correctly identified so our plan to improve is an accurate reflection of what is happening in the building.

Throughout this school year, the teachers have continued to work on improving instruction. This is happening through workshops and coaching practices. Our Instructional Coach, Amanda Fjeld, is an excellent resource for the teachers.  She assists in developing lessons or activities, provides feedback and suggestions for improvement, and supports the teachers in areas they would like support. We are continually looking at ways to improve how we are teaching and supporting students.

There have recently been some changes in the Transportation Department causing routes to be combined.  This has been a good thing for some, but for several families, it means a longer bus ride.  We are hoping in the next few weeks, the routes will go back to the previous routes. Until then, please be patient with us. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Third quarter will be over on March 27th.  Parent/Teacher Conferences will be scheduled in April.  Parents will be receiving a scheduled time for both elementary and high school students.  We are hoping that by having a scheduled time for high school students, we will have more parents attend.  As a parent of several students in high school, I know that it is easy for me to forget about conferences because I can stop in when I have time.  We think that a scheduled time will help parents remember to stop in to see teachers. Stay tuned for more information.

The school board approved the calendar for the 2018-2019 school year. The calendar adopted was the same calendar adopted in all IASC (Itasca Area School Collaborative) schools.  Having the same calendar allows for our high school students to take classes from other districts through telepresence.  There is a major change in the calendar.  The students and staff will have a week off the week of President’s Day in February 2019.

The teachers and staff members continue to look at ways to celebrate the students. If you have any ideas on how we might celebrate the great things students do, please contact me or your child’s teacher.

Thank you for being part of the Floodwood School! You are appreciated for your dedication the education!
