We are Kind: Kindergarten students learned about bullying and how to be a kind friend during our STEM lab this week. After viewing a video segment, partners discussed how the bullies could show kindness instead. Then, we applied what we discussed with three hands-on STEM building projects: Stacking cups, Keva Planks, and playdough creations. We talked about how we need to be gentle and use helping hands with friends while playing stacking cups. We practiced working together as a strong and skilled team during our Keva building. Finally, we practiced giving and receiving compliments while creating unique artforms out of playdough. K is for Kind!

Kindergarten students were challenged this week with the task of using their creativity to develop rules and procedures for math games. Given nothing more than sets of math materials, students came up with brilliant ideas and persevered through struggles alongside their peers. They were especially good at teaching their games to peers. So much more learning happens when children have the opportunity to play, use their creativity, and express their learning toward others to aid their understanding. Way to work, Kindergarten Crew!
The kindergarten crew developed core values regarding math workshop this week: 1. We work hard! 2. We make mistakes (because they cause productive struggle, endurance, perseverance, and a growth mindset that helps us learn from misconceptions)! 3. We work together! Every single activity in our classroom this week addressed at least one of these core values and many addressed all three. We are building a strong foundation for success!
Building a Foundation for Learning: The kindergarten class is a work in progress with students building a strong foundation for learning. We are discovering how to take risks, make mistakes, work together, problem solve, think creatively, persevere through challenges, and celebrate learning as members of a team. Kinetic Energy: Full STEAM Ahead! This week in kindergarten, students learned about potential and kinetic energy through a variety of movement activities and hands-on projects. Our learning had us in a perpetual state of motion as we cooked two varieties of waffles and compared and contrasted the results, observed and cared for our plants growing in our homemade greenhouses, played with our preschool friends outdoors during our final PreK-K Get Together, explored magnetic push/pull forces and recorded our results, and built and tested roller coaster designs. So much rich learning took place in our classroom this week and it was all wrapped around the unstoppable forces that engage young children—play! As we get ready to close this amazing year together, we will continue to be in a state of continuous motion. Kinetic energy…encouraging us to experience learning holistically—is what kindergarten is all about.

K2 STEM Learns from Community Expert: The kindergarten and 2nd grade students learned about electrical circuits from a community expert today during K2 STEM. Several students asked insightful questions, made connections to their own experiences with electricity and wiring in a house, and were interested in learning more about this field of science!
French Toast and Friends: Fun Food Friday's Spontaneous Lesson in Kindness On Fun Food Friday, our kindergarten students used a problem as an opportunity to extend kindness and warm the hearts (and bodies) of classmates! The Problem: Our room was quite cold and students were having a hard time warming up. The Solution: A student thought it would be a nice surprise to make something hot in our classroom kitchen for her friends. We looked in our cupboards and fridge, discussed what we knew about cooking at home, and decided on french toast! We went through the process of gathering supplies and several classmates immediately chipped in to help. Cracking eggs, adding sweet spices, cutting slices of bread, dunking, frying, and cutting were tasks shared by a kitchen of experts. Afterward, we enjoyed two varieties of french toast while devouring a feast of "good fit" books with friends. We also had several visitors stop by to find out what we were cooking and sample our work. French Toast and Friends: This recipe makes Fun Food Fridays extra delicious!

Fun with a Purpose: Last week, kindergarten students worked in the kitchen, designed and built a variety of structures, took observational notes on our caterpillars, learned about airplane design, and wrote clues for a mystery friend’s Easter egg hunt. Learning is kindergarten is fun, purposeful, and rigorous! We build upon what we know, practice skills we’re learning across all subject areas, apply each step of the inquiry process in the moment of an authentic challenge, and build community within our classroom in a myriad of ways. All of this takes place within the context of engaging, meaningful, play-based explorations. This is fun with a purpose in kindergarten!
Last week's K2 STEM hosted a high school paper airplane-making expert! We followed directions for a simple design and then tested our prototypes in the gym. Afterward, we learned about a special design he created and watched it SOAR all over the small gym with the slightest touch. We cannot wait to learn more about this design and more at our upcoming STEAM night!

Lessons Learned: We can learn a lot from our little ones if we give them an opportunity to teach us. This week, kindergarten students learned what it means to be an active citizen who genuinely cares for others, strives to improve his/her community in practical ways, perseveres through difficulties, resolves conflict respectfully, accepts others, learns from misconceptions, cooperates as a member of a team, demonstrates effort in all tasks, and celebrates collective accomplishments. Today, we celebrated them and all they do to make Floodwood a better community for us all. These little learners are active citizens who have much to teach all of us if we will listen. We can feel fortunate for lessons learned.
Digging Into Flexibility and Cooperation Skills: Two enthusiastic culinary artists took to the kindergarten kitchen early Friday morning to make the day's snack--Healthy energy spheres! Both students worked together to gather supplies, consider one another's ideas for the recipe, and work together to concoct the most amazing treats for the class. Flexibility and cooperation were character traits of the week that these chefs deliciously applied in an authentic context. Yum!
Kindergarten students designed posters this week for Governor Walz in preparation for a special invitation to the Capitol for Wednesday's State of the State Address. Students wrote about what they love and get to do in school. The purpose of this writing activity was to inform our elected officials of the exceptional education Floodwood students receive each day. Our young children are active citizens with the power to influence change!

We are Works in Progress in Kindergarten! We continually work on tasks just beyond our present level of independence and celebrate misconceptions as essential ingredients to learning. With support and some productive struggle, we engage in genuine problems, practice the perseverance required to work through a challenging task, and employ the creativity needed to construct solutions. Productive struggle is a state of engagement that equips children with the skills and growth mindset to work through progressively rigorous problems that are just beyond their current level of understanding. The challenges your children face each day build upon their interests and background and prior knowledge, which enable them to push through feelings of frustration to identify solutions. When your children engage in productive struggle, their capacity to learn at higher levels increases. Their brainpower actually expands when they experience and overcome struggle! This week, we persevered through a series of mathematical challenges involving representations of numbers beyond ten. Students were required to represent two digit numbers with ten-sticks and cubes to build unique garages for their toy vehicles. Many students became visibly frustrated, but they willingly persevered with varying support from adults and peers. The results were astounding! Students asked to play our building game during free choice and wanted to be challenged with even bigger numbers. In their words, teacher's challenges were too easy! We are a perpetual work in progress in kindergarten. We embrace challenges, celebrate misconceptions, support one another, persevere through difficulties, engage our creativity, grow our brains, and experience genuine learning.
It's a great day at school when there are audible moans from students when told it is time to wrap up our STEM lab session to get ready for dismissal. Kindergarten and second grade students were deeply involved in planning, designing, testing, and improving arch bridges that would hold the most weight. This is a work in progress that will be revisited next week!

K2 STEM Challenge: Truffula Trees Kindergarten and 2nd grade students employed their creativity as they worked through the scientific process to design and build Truffula Trees. These projects were inspired by Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and were required to stand tall and unassisted in a mount of play clay. What a creative and colorful bunch of STEMers we have!
Building a Sturdy Foundation with STEM Infusion: Deliberately connecting topics across the curriculum in tangible, meaningful ways results in genuine learning and highly engaged students. Kindergarten students are experiencing STEM-infusion with multiple connections across ELA, mathematics, science, and social studies. Here's an overview of what we did this week. In parenthesis are the subject areas these bullet points addressed. *We explored a variety of fictional stories and determined characters, setting, and plot. Stories dealing with problems, solutions, creativity, and perseverance were our primary themes across each day. (ELA--Reading Literature; Social Studies) *We read notes from our leprechaun, Cone (phonetic spelling for Connie), who is a character in fictional stories she bought and mailed to us this week! (How to Trap a Leprechaun and How to Catch a Leprechaun were two of our favorites) (ELA--Reading Literature; ELA--Phonics and Phonemic Awareness; ELA--Foundational Skills) *We wrote notes to Cone, asking her questions and asking her to please stop messing up our classroom. (Social Studies; ELA--Phonics; ELA--Phonemic Awareness; ELA--Writing; ELA--Reading Literature) *We used clues Cone provided to make predictions and inferences. This directly transferred to our shared and independent reading work all week. (ELA--Reading Literature; Speaking and Listening) *We practiced all 100 of our Fry’s 1st Sight Words for Kindergarten in Cone’s daily notes. All 100 were used, read, and reused all week! (ELA—Phonics; Foundational) *Cone's notes made hints to different types of homes her people live in. We explored 3D shapes of homes, different building materials and strength tests, diverse homes across cultures, and compared/contrasted two types of igloos--one in the Arctic region and another (glass igloo) found in Finland! (Social Studies; Technology; Mathematics--Geometry; Measurement; ELA--Research; Listening; Foundational Skills; Reading Literature) *We researched the Northern Lights phenomenon (named rainbow, dancing lights by several students). The glass igloos of far northern Finland were created in order that people could view the Northern Lights 200 nights a year! (ELA--Research; Listening; Social Studies; Science; Mathematics--Geometry; Measurement) *We moved back and forth within the scientific process to construct a sturdy 3D home for Cone that was symmetrical and dome-shaped (which we discovered is half a sphere or a semi-sphere), like those we researched. However, we had to use creativity, collaboration, perseverance, and communication to experience success. It was definitely a team effort and took nearly all week to complete. (Social Studies; Engineering; ELA—Research; Mathematics—Geometry; Measurement; Technology; Writing) *Cone wrote about her favorite healthy foods, shaped in her favorite sphere shape. We used context clues and prior knowledge to discover her need, looked up our recipe for PB Bites, read and followed the recipe, divided the completed treat evenly between classmates and Cone, and wrote a note for her to eat them that night. (Reading—Foundational; Phonics; Phonemic Awareness; Writing; Speaking; Mathematics—Operations; Geometry) *We followed Cone’s clues and direction to make homemade pizza “pi” for Pi Day! (Reading—Foundational; Phonics; Phonemic Awareness; Mathematics; Science) *We learned about the essential “ingredients” needed to produce rainbows, prior knowledge of rainbows, and the arch shapes rainbows make. (ELA—Reading Informational Text; Compare/Contrast; Phonics; Science; Mathematics) We are excited to continue our “work in progress” with STEM-Infusion. Our discoveries and level of engagement within multiple, intricately-connected subject areas is evidence of genuine learning.

In honor of Dr. Seuss, the kindergarten class celebrated creativity through a variety of STEM-infused studies. Creativity is an essential characteristic of a 21st-century learner who thinks outside the box to solve real-world problems. One picture book that helped us understand creativity this week was Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. Rosie uses her imagination to create amazing creations out of recycled junk and eventually discovers she can do her best work after experiencing defeat. She was our inspiration for using our creativity, persevering, and using mistakes as opportunities to learn. Over the course of the last three weeks, we have been learning about the basic needs of all living things. This week, we designed a product that represents some of our learning. With adult support, students read about an animal of choice and identified its basic needs. Afterward, students wrote and drew about the needs of the animal in their STEM journals. We reread our inspirational text of the week, Rosie Revere, Engineer, and discussed how Rosie designed a unique hat for her Zookeeper uncle. We decided to demonstrate our learning about animals by constructing creative hats depicting their individual needs. Students wrote a list of needs, drew a blueprint for their designs, gathered recyclables, and created, experimented, and revised plans when things didn’t go quite right. Just like Rosie, kindergarten students persevered and experienced deeper understanding of the content within a highly creative product. This entire process was extremely rigorous and integrated multiple reading, writing, social studies, science, and math standards as students worked within the parameters of the highest level of learning--knowledge utilization--to use what they've learned and applied in a new, creative, authentic manner to solve a problem. We're expanding our brainpower and using it in new and creative ways everyday in K!

The Floodwood Senior High Band performed at the North East region contest in Virginia, MN today. We received two Excellent ratings and one Superior rating! Also great job to our 3 soloists who competed today. Sky Kienbaum was awarded an Excellent rating and Zoe Johnson and Jayna Kemp received Superior ratings! Congratulations Floodwood Band!!
The Future's So Bright! Learning in kindergarten cannot be fully understood unless it is experienced first-hand. It is intentional, integrated, meaningful, student-centered, powerful discoveries in action. This is exactly what children experience each day in our classroom. This is what genuine learning should look like for all students. Children must have every opportunity to pursue their interests and questions. They should feel safe enough to take risks and make mistakes because they lead to deeper understanding. Children must have time and space to explore, wonder, experiment, engage, converse, grow, and play each day. They must believe learning is FUN and even feel confident believing they are acquiring important skills needed to be leaders...both now and for the rest of their lives as active citizens. Ask these young students what school is like for them each day. They will likely talk about what they get to DO and the fun they experience at any moment in the day. They will tell you about good books we read together, games we play, new materials we get to investigate, big words we discover and put into context, songs we sing, creations we design and improve, experiments we conduct in our kitchen, stories we compose, and celebrations we enjoy together. They may even tell you they will ALWAYS stay in kindergarten and never leave...and then explain how they made their point absolutely clear by giving the teacher a great big bear hug. Our Floodwood kindergarteners get to experience this level of learning every single day and are developing the characteristics of leaders right at this moment. They are curious, compassionate, confident, insightful community members and it's my hope their successes will only magnify as they prepare for the future. Their future's SO bright! Our Floodwood kindergarten students are amazing individuals and are experiencing nothing short of the highest form of learning. We welcome you to come experience genuine learning with us and help support what we get to do in our classroom every single day.

Peers as Problem Solvers: Kindergarten students strengthened their skills as problem solvers within authentic contexts throughout the week. Whether it's figuring out how to transport water for our playdough recipe without spilling, finding room in the refrigerator for a tray of cookie dough, knowing how much money to spend at our classroom grocery store without going into debt, or building a magnetic tower that will withstand the weight of toy animals, kindergarten students are developing the mindset to see problems as opportunities to learn every day!
Perseverance: Building on Challenges to Experience Genuine Learning Last week's K2 STEM lab session focused on the essential trait of perseverance. We walked through the picture book, What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada and discussed ways that problems serve as opportunities to learn. After our brief introduction and review of the inquiry process, kindergarten and second grade students explored multiple STEM challenges displayed throughout the room. These challenges were intentionally designed to cause students to collaborate, problem solve, analyze, and improve their structures within the constraints of time and materials. The results were remarkable! Students were deeply engaged in these processes and persevered despite setbacks. This character trait of perseverance will help these young learners continue to excel now and throughout their lives as thinkers, creators, and leaders.

Jeff surpassed the mark on 1/28/19 during a road game against East Central and has continued to put up impressive point totals in every game since. We LOVE Science! Kindergarten students are having fun conducting their own science experiments at home this week with their Valentine Science Kits. Students have been reading through the directions, making hypotheses, conducting the experiments, and analyzing the results. These projects utilize everyday objects and are serving as an effective "warm up" to our extended inquiry activities planned for next week! Here is one student's experiment with red hot candies and three different temperatures of water. Which one do you think won? What does this tell us? This is big learning for our tiny team of thinkers!
STEM To Go: Students involved with our K2 STEM lab group will have an opportunity to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics concepts at home in a series of STEM To Go challenges. Our very first participant is 2nd grade student, Lillian, who devoted much of her weekend to planning, creating, and redesigning an animal shelter. She is demonstrating the essential characteristics of a scientist and we are excited to hear about her experiences when we return to our K2 STEM lab this week.
K2 STEM has launched! On Friday, kindergarten and 2nd grade students came together for a snack, story, and lab session with a focus on teamwork and the scientific process. After reading What Do You Do With an Idea? Students learned about the process of asking questions, visualizing ideas, planning, creating, and redesigning within a community environment where all ideas are valued. We participated in a critical-thinking warm up activity and then learned about each of the 5 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) challenges arranged around the room. Students immediately delved into their independent and collaborative work constructing a variety of structures comprised of different materials. Students drew and wrote about their blueprints, formulated hypotheses, tested out ideas, assisted peers, provided constructive feedback, and made improvements to their projects as needed. We look forward to this week's return to the lab!
Authentic Learning with a Kitchen of Baking Experts: On Friday, the kindergarten class made homemade caramel rolls with two of our favorite resident experts. We discovered the unique qualities of yeast, observed the reaction that takes place water, discussed the changes it has on the dough, and predicted the height of the dough when ready. We measured, melted, stirred, mixed, and poured. We discovered a couple of new kitchen tools, such as the bread hook and hot plate. We kneaded a lot, using two different methods. We rolled the dough and added the final ingredients. We baked, waited, and discovered that the aroma of the rolls could be detected from the library! To complete the day, we invited the 2nd grade class to share our snack during our K2 STEM lab session that afternoon. The learning that took place across all curricular areas is undeniable and the beaming smiles from every single student make this day one for our collective memory book. Discovery, wonder, collaboration, and relevancy...these are the essential ingredients in learning according to our kitchen of kindergarten experts.
K2 STEM Launch: Kindergarten and 2nd grade students will meet for our first lab session this Friday, February 8th. We will read What Do You Do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada. Afterward, we will discuss the process we will take each week asking questions, imagining results, planning, creating, and improving designs. After a guided practice/STEM warm up activity, students will be released to explore several stations of K and 2nd grade standards-based STEM challenges throughout the lab. Snow day #3 in the books: Kindergarten students had another phenomenal day of discovery during our third day of the deep deep freeze! Children conducted outdoor experiments with bubbles, water, eggs, and yogurt. They built space machines and took authentic problems and designed effective solutions to rescue pets from the cold. Scientists, technicians, engineers, and mathematicians... THIS is what learning looks like for our brilliant little learners! STEM Snow days Challenge in K: A BIG success!
Bakers, Builders, and Boiling Water Makers: Kindergarten students are working hard on their STEM challenges for snow day #2! They are using a variety of materials and processes for building structures and improving their designs. They are also concocting delicious recipes for cinnamon and caramel rolls! Finally, they are experimenting with boiling water and the reaction that takes place when it hits the artic-like air. What will snow day #3 look like?

The Home Lab in Action: A STEM Challenge Update... K students have been busy conducting their own experiments at home today. Our youngest STEM scientists are formulating hypotheses, testing ideas, evaluating results, and modifying variables to increase effectiveness of their designs. These kinder scientists are busy discovering BIG ideas, specifically tailored to individual interests and wrapped around the vehicle of play. This is learning in action!
The "Snow Days STEM Challenge" is on! Yesterday, kindergarten students created the following challenge for our two snow days: Stay warm indoors and read, write, build, and play! These activities selected exclusively by the group sharpen their skills as creative, inquisitive, engaged learners who are intrinsically motivated to work. Evidence of students' creative projects will be uploaded to our classroom blog and photographs with descriptions are already pouring in! One student immediately decided to construct a ramp out of a wrapping paper tube and then used a magnet structure to raise the end! What a powerful reflection of the learning taking place in our classroom and in the home each day. When students are provided opportunities to explore unique interests and questions within the context of rigorous projects, they naturally transfer this intrinsic motivation to learn beyond the classroom and in their own time. This STEM challenge is open to anyone with an interest, question, and desire to learn. Last week, kindergarten students continued their explorations into physics--push/pull forces, inclined planes, and the grade/steepness of a plane and how this impacts the movement of an object in motion. I intentionally let students struggle, problem-solve, and lead by their own hypotheses and discoveries. Very little direct instruction was involved beyond setting up rules for our work. As a result, our children are developing a growth mindset! They embrace their mistakes as opportunities to learn. They base their predictions on clues and former trials. They persevere and encourage one another. They celebrate the work of others and are not driven by competition between peers. Rather, they compete against their own best work and collaborate within a team environment. Overall, it is the PROCESS of learning and not the PRODUCT that fuels our rigorous, student-led work each day. This mindset will continue to expand their tenacity and have a direct impact on lifelong success. Here's a sneak peek into what we're planning this week: * We will continue our physics work with deeper studies of inclined planes. * We will also explore engineering with our brand new magnetic tiles that were ordered with some of our STEM grant money! * We will construct a marble tube track on our hallway wall. The paper tubes we've collected will be used in our construction. * We will learn about our new take-home resource this week. With STEM grant money, I have been able to create "STEM to Go" project tubs for take-home explorations! The students and I will explore this resource and practice expectations for proper care. Finally, our classroom kitchen is newly reorganized and expanded to make room for several new tools, thanks to a large STEM grant I recently received. Come visit us to see the changes!
Physics is Fun! Today in kindergarten, students explored inclined planes with angles of varying degrees and the impact they have on the speed of an object in motion. Rather than demonstrate these principles, adults in class posed questions, provided materials, and observed students in motion--discussing, predicting, testing, problem-solving, and redesigning. We began our day with a hunt around the room for inclined planes. We expanded our understanding midday with a discussion in the hall about inclined planes we have at school. At snack time, students used crackers, frosting, and milk cartons to design inclined planes. We tested the stability and effectiveness of our designs by rolling cereal spheres down the ramps and observing the results. Afterward, we used a variety of play materials to set our smaller, edible designs in motion. We spent the remainder of the day polishing our work. We have not formalized our discoveries and plan to revisit this important project right away in the morning. We are, as are our ramps structure, a work in progress. A Snapshot of our Week in Kindergarten: Students poured their hearts and minds into writing, building, and applying academic vocabulary this week in a variety of student-driven, authentic contexts. Here's a peek into what they explored... Kindergarteners took to writing independently and with their peers upon arrival time each day this week. They gathered their supplies, scattered around the room, and wrote sight words, names, descriptive sentences, labels for classroom objects, and recipes! All of these activities were entirely student-driven. They brainstormed, planned, problem-solved, collaborated, and congratulated each other's accomplishments stretching out sounds, recalling sight words, and forming complete, well-written compositions! Students composed blueprints and followed these designs to build incline planes/ramps. They tested their structures, revisited plans, and tested the overall stability and effectiveness with a variety of materials. This week, we will delve deeper into the physics behind forces (push/pull) as well as the impact the grade (the amount of steepness) has on the speed of an object traveling down an incline plane. Our STEM studies will be pretty exciting! This week, the students and I composed a recipe for melted (decomposing) snowmen that was comprised of several sight words the boys and girls had to recall. This was rigorous work that demanded an accurate recall of common words as well as proper penmanship within a small space. I took note of handwriting skills, fine motor control, decoding skills, and sight word recall. Our hands were tired after this two-day activity! On Friday, kindergarteners had to read their recipes for melted (decomposing) snowmen and follow the steps to make their snack for the day. They did a marvelous job and even attempted to compose (put together) their snowmen once more. This proved difficult, but many of them persevered! What an amazing week of learning in kindergarten! Our authentic, engaging activities emphasized writing, reading, social skills, engineering, science, and application of very complex terminology related to STEM. Who's ready for another fun-filled week? I AM!

Work in Progress! Our kindergarten classroom will be experiencing a transformation in the near future. We were just awarded a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) grant and plan to use most of the funds to complete our design of a fully-functional, student-centered classroom kitchen. We also plan to use some of the money awarded to create STEM "To Go" buckets for take-home, hands-on projects. Check back often to see our progress. Creative, Kind Thinkers: Kindergarten students took part in a cooperative celebration after our long winter break: An indoor "snowball" celebration! As a group, students decided to use materials already available in the classroom for their snowballs: Scrap paper! Furthermore, they worked together to create a set of expectations for safe play: 1. Only throw the snowball at friends' feet. 2. Ask permission first. 3. Clean up our mess. Students took ownership of the entire process and were not only creative in their planning, but kind in their attention toward expectations and treatment of others.
Emergent Readers, Engaged Engineers--A Typical Day in K: Kindergarten students worked together as a team of builders to construct a sight word castle on Friday! Peers assisted each another while reading sight word labels on the clear cups and then positioned these cups to make the walls of the castle. Students worked extensively on their construction over the course of the morning. Not only did they gain practice with our 100 sight words, but they analyzed and tested a variety of sturdy constructions.
Our Construction Site: A Sweet Spot to Learn Kindergarten students, alongside our senior class assistants, spent the morning before winter break constructing gingerbread houses. After spending the week reading Hansel and Gretel and discussing our design plans, students went right to work constructing a solid structure using a variety of materials. We problem-solved ways to repair our structures, inspected peers' sturdy designs, and tested out (and sampled) many sweet building materials. Kindergarten students (and even our big helpers) poured their hearts into their creations!
Jolabokaflod Day: PJ Reading Day in K! Kindergarten students enjoyed an entire day devoted to literacy last week. We constructed cozy reading forts, went "shopping" for "good fit" texts, invited classmates to read with us, and hunkered down in our dimmed classroom to read with flashlights and plenty of chocolates on hand. We learned about this Icelandic tradition of giving gifts of books for Christmas and reading and eating sweets all day in bed. What a sweet way to usher in the holiday season!
Kindergarten students continued partner engineering work last week with marshmallow and toothpick structures. Though much trial and error, we discovered the marshmallows were much too fragile. They crumbled and did not hold the weight of our hands when we applied any amount of downward force. We returned to step 5 of our STEM inquiry process multiple times as we revised blueprints and improved our designs. We also invited the 2nd graders to our class to help us problem-solve our marshmallow and toothpick structures. They confirmed our hypotheses--marshmallows are not the ideal building structure. While in the midst of our engineering work this week, our classroom was infiltrated by a mischievous elf! Initially, he was bent on messing up our room. We used our iPads to take pictures of evidence of his misdoings and also conducted some research on suitable traps that would withstand the force of an energetic elf. We decided to use our marshmallow structures to trap him overnight early in the week. We discovered he was nocturnal and had a penchant for sweets--especially candy canes. Our structures were almost exclusively made of squares and rectangles. After testing out multiple designs...and receiving some clues from one of the elf's daily notes, we learned that triangles are much more resilient. Thanks to the elf who supplied us with a few clues, some research, and a bag of new materials, we went back to our drawing board and created structures made with gum drops in the shape of pyramids. This was the key to success and we met his challenge to cooperatively build a trap that measured more than 10 cubes in height! Hooray for our enthusiastic and persistent engineers and one little elf who learned how to be kind in kindergarten!

STEM Structures with Flat and Solid Shapes: Kindergarten students spent the week planning, testing out, and redesigning a series of structures with flat and solid geometric shapes. On Friday, students worked through this scientific process to visualize effective structures based upon their previous learning, properly identify flat and solid shapes, and collaborate with their team members. Many structures collapsed, yet these engineers persevered and revised their designs to construct sturdier models!
Generations of Generosity! The kindergarten and 6th grade classes worked alongside a host of high school students, parents, staff, and community members this morning and put generosity in action in a BIG way. Teams were hard at work all morning creating a beautiful variety of holiday treats that will be given as gifts during our upcoming Christmas caroling event. What a sweet way to bring generations of people together for a common goal!

Any temperature greater than 100 degrees F is considered a fever. Children must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications (such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, etc.) in order to return to school. This applies even if the underlying cause of the fever is non-infectious, such as middle ear infections, etc. Children with a fever do not usually feel well enough to participate and attend school activities. It is recommended that they be given 24 hours to recover from the fever before returning to school. Please note that a child who exhibits symptoms of illness without a fever may be sent home if the nurse feels this is in the best interest of the child or the child’s classmates (with compromised immune systems)

STEM Challenges with 3D Structures: Over the course of last week, kindergarten students explored STEM concepts beyond the kitchen and focused on constructing 3D shapes from a specific set of materials--playdough spheres and cylinder coffee stir sticks. The question I posed was this: Can you construct a tower that is at least 10 counting cubes tall, is free-standing (stands without any help from our hands), and uses playdough spheres (balls) and sticks? Students got right to work visualizing their construction and making plans for creation. They shared materials, problem-solved with peers, analyzed their constructions, built, measured, and rebuilt. This initial activity was extremely challenging and intentionally designed to get students to struggle through the process and begin to discover which 3D designs were most effective. This week, we will delve further into the scientific process of inquiry. We will discuss our questions/problems, experiment with a variety of building materials, visualize and plan solutions, construct a free-standing 3D structure, analyze results, and revisit our designs to improve stability and effectiveness. Last week's initial work with structure buildings and our discoveries involving the strongest, most effective 3D shapes will equip us with the background knowledge we need for this STEM challenge of the week. Growing Generous Learners: The Fruits of Our Labor: Throughout the week, we read and reread variations of the folktale, Stone Soup. We learned about generosity and how contributions (no matter their size) collectively make BIG results! This theme was applied to a special Alphabet Stone Soup project we completed on Thursday. Students helped me think of possible foods to correlate with each letter and foods were assigned to each member of our group last week. The letters Q and X were especially challenging and required a little research on my part! This week, each student contributed one or two small ingredients for our own "Stone" soup. Every contribution aligned with a letter of the alphabet and were stored on our Alphabet Stone Soup pantry shelf on Thursday morning. With the help of a classroom mom, small groups of students worked through the process of preparing a feast to share with our little classroom community. Students washed, sliced, poured, measured, mixed, added, and stirred our crock pot creation. There was such an abundance of ingredients that we even hand enough leftovers to create another entire crock pot of soup. We created invitations to deliver to staff members, high school assistants, and parents to share in our feast that afternoon. We had several folks visit us and enjoy our bounty of delicious soup, rolls, and "stone" chocolate candies given to us by one of our favorite classroom paras! It was an amazing day that made such a huge impact on our understanding of the theme of generosity. When we share, the results are always incredible...AND delicious.
Growing Big Learners from a Strong STEM: This week, kindergarten students used the scientific process of inquiry to design and improve a design for grilled cheese sandwiches. Students followed the process of questioning, making hypotheses, planning, creating, and redesigning a meal requiring multi-step directions. It was rigorous work over the course of two days! On Monday, we wondered how the shape of our cheese topping (circles cut from string cheese or "rectangles" pulled from the cheese stick) would impact the sandwich. Which process of topping our cheese sandwiches would melt easier and taste better? We made predictions, created our product (on "double bubble" rolls mimicking our Venn diagram/double bubbles used for compare/contrast activities), analyzed our finished product, and discussed possible redesigns. The sandwiches were pretty good, but we felt we could improve our designs and learn from our mistakes. On Tuesday, we revisited the process of inquiry and discussed our conclusions--the "rectangle" cheese we pulled from the string cheese was better because it was thinner and covered more area of our rolls. However, students also concluded our "double bubble" rolls were too thick (like our string cheese circles were too thick!) and we needed to redesign our sandwiches with thinner bread. Our math standard with learning scale and learning targets for the week involved comparing and contrasting shapes, according to the attributes of these shapes. While our main focus was on attributes such as lines, corners/points, and sides, students made connections to other measurable attributes such as thickness within this authentic cooking context! We visualized and then made blueprints of an improved sandwich with "square" bread and recreated the ideal sandwich--square bread with rectangular cheese. This was an opportune time (again, within a meaningful context) to analyze the similarities/differences between these two shapes within a relevant context. We concluded this design was the best by far. The cheese melted uniformly and the bread was perfectly crisp! This two-day process aligned directly to the content areas of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Bravo, STEM scientists!
Cooking up the STEM in Kindergarten: Our daily cooking experiences in kindergarten are fostering a great deal of curiosity, questioning, and interest in experimentation. We have begun to explore the field of STEM research with our kitchen activities, learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These subject areas have always been naturally integrated in our cooking studies, but now they are intentionally designed to be the force behind our work. Here is a snapshot of our wonderings over the last two weeks. Can you see how our explorations align with STEM? Maple Cinnamon Applesauce study: Do smaller slices of apple cook faster than larger chunks? Are my chunks 1 inch long? How can I measure them? Does more liquid make the applesauce cook faster? What would happen if we cooked it on low overnight? How does mushing them with this tool (potato masher) help the apple chunks? What is the temperature difference between "low" and "high" on our crockpot? Would a larger crockpot help our applesauce cook faster? How does our applesauce compare/contrast with a recipe we made in the microwave? Why does the microwave cook so much faster? Homemade Churned Butter (using my great great grandma's butter churn vs. baby food jars vs. our KitchenAid mixer): Which method is easiest and makes the best butter? How long will we need to churn vs. shake in the jars? How did people churn for THIS LONG every day??? How does it change from liquid cream to whipped cream to separated butter and buttermilk? What does shaking or mixing do to make the butter? What does a marble do to help make butter in the jar? Why does this butter separate from the buttermilk? What can we use this liquid for? Why does our butter look, taste, and feel different from store-bought butter? How is butter made and sold in stores? How does this old-fashioned butter churn work? Do these gears need to be fixed to churn better? How does this churn compare/contrast with our mixer? How long will the mixer need to take to make butter? Cornbread vs. Buttermilk Cornbread: Which method is easiest and quickest? What ingredients are in the Jiffy box mix of cornbread? How is it all put together in the factory? How do the batters compare/contrast? Why is this batter with the buttermilk so much taller and thicker? How long will it take to cook both batters at the same time? How does the batter change from a liquid to a solid in the oven? Why is this batter still gooey after cooking the right amount of time? These young children are incredibly curious and engaged in our daily cooking experiments. It is this curiosity that is beginning to guide us further into STEM topics of interest. What's cooking in K? Rigorous, Hands-on, Authentic Learning in K: This week's "Fun Food Friday" cooking experience had kindergarten students applying what they've learned about comparing and contrasting! We read two texts by Laura Numeroff (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Cat a Cupcake) and compared/contrasted key details and central themes of the stories, using a "double bubble" or Venn diagram to record our ideas. We also compared/contrasted two "good fit" texts about food groups and created Venn diagrams with evidence collected from the texts. These instructional-level texts really prepared us for hands-on applications with two different recipes--one for pumpkin spice cookies and the other for pumpkin spice cupcakes. We compared/contrasted required ingredients and tools, discussed predictions for similarities and differences between the two products, compared/contrasted the batters by using many of our senses, and analyzed the final products with a taste test during snack time. We had so many ideas that we ran out of space on our double bubbles! Students were highly engaged throughout the day in these hands-on, minds-on activities and made deep connections to our academic work in numerous other authentic ways. For example, we compared/contrasted our physical appearances with friends (using concepts connected to measurement), noticed a Venn diagram in the 2nd grade classroom (which we HAD to go investigate!), and even compared and contrasted our pumpkin spice cookies with some surprise sugar cookies brought by a classmate! This added an entirely different level to the day's learning. The magnitude of knowledge acquisition during this week's "Fun Food Friday" cannot be fully quantified. Without a doubt, students are well on their way to mastery of challenging concepts and are enthusiastic about future endeavors! That intrinsic motivation is like the frosting on our cupcakes...SO sweet! Learning is infinitely more relevant and FUN when we connect it to our interests and prior experiences. Apple Pie Roll Ups: Authentic Problem-solving in K We reflected on this recipe individually afterward and opinions were mixed. Some students really loved it and several did not. Having mixed opinions and reflecting on what we would change helped students learn... *We all have our own opinions and preferences. Each should be respected. *We should try new foods, even if we're not sure we'll like them. *We can problem-solve together and analyze different options for the products we create in class. *Mistakes (or in this case, less than favorable results for a recipe) are opportunities to learn. If we had all loved the roll ups, we would have missed a chance to use our skills as problem-solvers to think of alternative ingredients. Last week's recipe provided an authentic means to learn and grow...together!

What's Cookin' in K? Kindergarten students spent the week writing recipes using illustrations and initial phonemes in words. We used environmental print as a guide and also our own imaginations and knowledge of letter sounds for our concoctions. Later, we created healthy snacks from a buffet of snack foods and wrote out recipes of our ideas. Finally, we used a wide assortment of everyday materials to create unique menu items for our classroom kitchen/restaurant. Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies all baked into one delicious week! We're hungry for more!

Fun Friday! Kindergarten students used a variety of math, reading, and writing skills to help make the day's snack: Cinnamon raisin roll ups. This activity taught students a genuine purpose for reading and writing and had them following multi-step directions, identifying letter sounds and sight words, counting, measuring, strengthening fine motor skills, problem-solving, predicting, evaluating results, and EATING! We had such a good time and made plans for next week's recipe: Homemade applesauce. Visitors are always welcome (please check in at the office first) and be ready to take part in purposeful, engaging, student-centered learning.
Voting matters! Kindergarteners learned about the importance of voting and had real-life application of the process by advocating for their favorite playdough color. Students read and wrote their selections, represented tally marks, counted and recorded the final results, and assisted in mixing up a batch of our winner--red. Voting matters...and makes our classroom experiences richer and more authentic!

Tomorrow on Wednesday Super Second Graders will perform "contraction surgery!" We will study our patients. I had a patient named "cannot." After surgery he came out feeling brand new with a different look, "can't." The band-aid is our apostrophe. Second graders solving an unknown number in the middle math problem. For example one sudent is thinking I saw 10 cubes. My partner pulled off an amount off and put it behind his back. Then he gave me the leftovers. So I know there was 10 now I am looking at 4. What number of cubes does my partner have behind his back? I think 6 behind his back, because 4+6=10 or 10-6=4. Third graders have beat the teacher 3 out of 4 days at the WBT Scoreboard Game with a mighty OH YEAH! Ask your student to show you how our classroom rules lead them to Polar Pride!
In math today, second graders played a game called, "Which bucket will win?" Each student was given one hundred, one ten, and one cube worth one. Second graders saw the impact place value has when filling up a bucket. The other buckets ended up with 40 and 25 in them. Strategy came into play. They found using their 100 square made the most impact. Results of Round 3 they will find out tomorrow!
Great news from Telisha Bennett... we received a grant for kids plus from Northland foundation. This grant will be use to support the kids plus coordinator position and to help the program. I've teamed up with Floodwood school community ed and will be offering an after school program on Wednesdays with snacks, planned activities, crafts, homework help, outings such as the school play ground more info will be available after school starts. Here's a sneak peek of our room at the school.
