Happy Halloween!
Parents and community are welcome to come watch the 12:30 outdoor elementary parade. Please arrive early and park in the parking lot on the polar bear (south) side or on the north side (where parent pick up/drop off is). Please do not park on Highway 73. You should start seeing the parade on the south side by 12:40. They will be walking clockwise all the way around the school building starting at the north entrance. There will also be a virtual parade published today.
Have a great Halloween! Be safe!

Happy Retirement Day to one of our own, Pam Rahja!
Pam is retiring after 34 years of serving the Floodwood School and our students. All of us in Floodwood would like to thank you, Pam, for your commitment, dedication and resilience over the years, and we wish you nothing but the best as you start this next chapter in your life!
With the help of Pam's daughter, here are some fun facts for her last day:
1. Pam likes to travel - she's been to Europe and been on the top of the Eiffel Tower.
2. Pam has 7 grandchildren - she loves spending time playing board games and card games with all of them.
3. Makes some pretty cool cakes from birthday to wedding cakes.
4. Best shopper around - can close down any store!
5. She would drop anything to help out family or friends - this has been proven to show in her 34 years of work at Floodwood School.
6. If a party begins at 8:00, tell her 6:00.
7. She makes amazing roasts in her special roasting pot.
and 8. She likes to play the game "where did I leave my phone."
Thank you to Pam's daughter for helping find some fun facts for her last day! And Pam, thank you again for your 34 years of dedication to the Floodwood students. You will be deeply missed by all, but we can't wait to hear how you are enjoying retirement. :-)
p.s. if you see Pam around, make sure to wish her a Happy Retirement - oh, and make sure to help her find her phone! :-)

In honor of Unity Day and National Bullying Prevention Month, the kindergarten class spent the day learning about bullying and how to demonstrate kindness!
We discussed different bullying behaviors, strategies for responding appropriately, and ways we can extend kindness toward all others in our lives.
Videos, partners talks, whole group discussions, picture books, games, a cooking experience making orange playdough (the official color of Unity Day), and hands-on projects helped us see that We are Kind in Kindergarten!

Dear Parents and Guardians:
Now that winter weather has arrived, here is the information regarding our process for determining whether school is cancelled or if the buses will be running late. Our procedure for the decision is based on the following:
* Information regarding the road from the MN Department of Transportation.
* The amount of snow and ice that has accumulated or the amount we could possibly get based on weather forecasts from the National Weather Service.
* The temperature according to the National Weather Service forecasts.
* The decision of whether or not our school closes or remains open is not based on what other schools in the area are doing.
* The decision of closing school will typically occur before 5:45 a.m. to ensure sufficient notice to families and employees.
* An alert will be sent to all student contacts that are listed in your Campus portal. (see more info below on how to edit your info)
* The notice of school closings will be given to TV stations: CBS Channel 3, KBJR Channel 6, and WDIO/WIRT Channel 10 & 13,
The notice of school closings will be given to radio stations: Midwest Communications (93.9FM, 99.9FM, 650AM), WEBC 560AM, KKCB 105.1FM, KOZY 1320AM, and KMFY 96.9FM
* Notices will also be posted on Facebook and the school website.
* If there is a delay in school, Preschool will not be in session.
* If school is cancelled or released early due to inclement weather, all evening activities will be cancelled.
If school is open, and parents choose not to send their children to school due to weather, the absence will be excused and assignments will be able to be made up. However we need you to contact us at attendance@isd698.org or 476-2285 ext. 70103 to excuse your child. The decision to send your child to school during extreme weather conditions is one every parent must make. We make the decision after careful consideration because the students’ safety and wellbeing is a high priority for us. Also, if your child drives to school, please consider having them ride the bus during inclement weather. Remember to contact Jessica Larson, Transportation Director directly at 763-286-6835 for all transportation changes.
Outside recess will occur each day as long as the temperature doesn’t fall below -10 degrees with the wind chill. All children need to be dressed appropriately for outdoor play. Their winter gear should include: hat, mittens, winter coat, snow pants, and snow boots. They might be able to go out without snow pants depending on the temperature, but having snow pants will ensure the students stay warm and dry. If a child comes to school without appropriate winter gear, they might not be able to play outside. Please help us to keep recess enjoyable by sending your child to school dressed for winter.
Please log in to your Campus Portal to ensure that we have the most current contact information for you. With our new Google back to school forms system, we have found it to be tricky to determine who has manual updates needed on our end. If your contact information has changed since last year especially, please check your portal to ensure that you get important messages from the school. Here are instructions for updating your portal: https://5il.co/mcw5
If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at rvillebrun@isd698.org or 218-476-2285 ext. 70102.
Sincerely,
Rae Villebrun

October 19, 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians:
The recent numbers from Greater St. Louis County decreased to 18.36. The numbers for our area are not impacting the school. For this reason, we will continue providing educational services as we have been.
On Tuesday, October 20th, our students and staff will be practicing our annual evacuation drill. Typically, we walk to the New Life Church and meet inside. This year, we will walk to the New Life Church and teachers will talk through the procedure, in case of a real evacuation, outside of the church and will practice social distancing.
Mark your calendar for November 11th. This will be picture retake day. Retakes are taken in the mornings. The photographer isn’t usually in the building long as there aren’t many retakes.
Influenza vaccination will be available November 4th at Floodwood School through Itasca Public Health. Additional information will be sent home at the end of October.
It was a nice little break for everyone. I hope your families had time to relax and enjoy spending time together.
Please contact us with questions or concerns. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
