Letter from Dr. Rae Villebrun, Superintendent/Principal

This week marks the end of the first semester.  The high school students will be taking Semester Finals this week. It has been many years since Semester Finals were given, but we believe giving the finals will allow students to see what they have learned over the course of the semester. As you may have noticed, our test scores in the elementary continue to increase. This has happened through intentional teaching, increasing rigor (depth of learning), holding students accountable, assessing what they are learning, and providing support when they are struggling. This year, we have fully implemented these same ideas into the high school. We expect similar results when we look at our MCA results in the fall.

As a celebration for the end of the semester, PK-12th grade students will have some fun and learn a little more about the American Indian culture. A group of students from the Cloquet school along with some of their Indian Education staff will be showcasing drumming and dancing on January 28th at 12:30 p.m. The community is welcome to attend. We are hoping for this to be an interactive experience for everyone. We appreciate this great opportunity.

Winter weather is in full swing. Please be sure that your children are coming dressed fully prepared to spend some time outside during recess. If the temperature is 10 degrees below zero with or without the wind chill, students will stay inside. If the temperature is above 10 degrees below zero with or without the wind chill, students will go outside. Students who aren’t dressed appropriately will remain in the vestibule during recess. There are winter clothes available for the students to borrow during recess, if they forget items at home. If your child does not have winter gear, please let your child’s teacher know and we will do our best to get the items they need.

Have you purchased your 2019-2020 yearbook? If not, you don’t want to miss out on the great work our Yearbook class is doing as they put together another amazing pictorial representation of the school year. Contact Ms. Gillespie at kgillespie@isd698.org, if you are interested in ordering. You will not be disappointed. The elementary will not have a separate yearbook this year.

The staff will have a professional development day on January 27th. We will be finalizing the schedule for the 2020-2021 school year. Students will be registering for classes in February. We plan on sharing details of the new Career Pathways courses we will be offering in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
