Learning About Rocks and Crystals

Students had a great time learning about reactions using everyday kitchen items. Students started the week experimenting with how plain, vinegar, and sugar water changes Gummi Bears through osmosis.

Then students learned how things crystallize using Epsom salts mixed with water.   They learned about geodes and then made a glow-in-the-dark geode with an eggshell.

Monday's final project of the day was a project with a paper tree called Crystal Fireworks.  A crystal growing powder was used that made crystals grow on the outside of the tree.

Students spent time making predictions about what they thought would happen and then recorded the results after they saw the final stage of the experiments.

Tuesday's activities brought out students' excitement with the making of rock candy and No-Melt Snowflakes using Borax soap.  Students used pipe-cleaners to form a star and put them in a liquid solution of water and Borax.

Students wrapped up the day by making Glow-in-the-Dark necklaces or bracelets to bring home.

Students are looking forward a field trip on the final day of Summer Enrichment classes.  They will head to Jay Cooke State Park for a scavenger hunt to look for signs of animals, rock formations, and see nature.
