Physical Wellbeing - Listening to and taking care of your body for optimal health and functioning. Why is this important? Building awareness about the physical effects of the overuse of screens is important in order to understand how your screen time use impacts you physically. The healing effects of nature is an inspirational and powerful tool to promote physical wellbeing. This weeks challenge: What do you need to inspire you to spend two hours a week outside in nature? Who will join you? Where will you go? Be sure to notice how nature makes you feel physically and mentally.

MCA Testing will continue this week on April 29th for 5th, 8th and 10th grade. We would like to remind families to be sure their children are prepared with a good night’s rest, minimize screen time the night before and healthy breakfast. Also to do their best to be on time and present on days of testing. Teachers work hard to be sure to have extra snacks and fun to celebrate their hard work on testing days. It’s easy to use a screen to distract ourselves when we’re feeling upset. Learning about and developing mental wellbeing skills to cope with life stressors that aren’t screen-based expands possibilities for connecting with ourselves and provides for deeper learning and growing. This weeks challenge: Consider time spent on your device. What healthy activities is screen time replacing? Throughout the day, ask yourself - “Am I choosing to be on my device or am I on my device by habit or because I feel like I should be?” Be aware of what is happening in that moment and how you are feeling.

The FHS Senior High Band took a little trip recently. They experienced hearing an orchestra at Orchestra Hall, explored the Mall of America and played with the Pine River-Backus Senior High Band. The Pine River-Backus band director worked with our students as well on some of their pieces. It was a fun couple of days experiencing music outside the Floodwood band room. Coming up on May 3rd, the Floodwood bands will be playing at The Event Center for the yearly JAMD event! We would love to see you there!

Emotional Wellbeing is grounded in kindness toward self and an ability to recognize and perceive one’s own emotions and the emotions of others and respond skillfully. Why is this important? Being able to recognize and respond skillfully to one’s emotions is an important part of wellbeing and it takes a lot of practice. Practical tools can help the process. This weeks challenge: Kindness can be contagious. Practice productive, kind, positive self-talk by creating an affirmation for yourself that makes you feel proud, happy, or grateful. Then identify how you feel afterwards. Take a look at your social media feeds. Identify those you follow that encourage positivity. Be bold and unfollow those who do not.
